Death's Pet

Here is two-year-old story. This was written shortly after one of my closest pets passed away from old age.

Death's Pet

Michael still had some tears streaked down his face as he walked away from the tiny freshly filled hole. A single cross made out of popsicle sticks stood lonesome in the backyard. On this tiny cross read "Kin: The best gerbil to have ever lived on this Earth" This sat underneath an Oak tree between a pair of rose bushes.

Michael wiped the tears away as he walked by his two older sisters Gem and Em. They were both sixteen and he was only ten. Sometimes the two of them were nice to him but they were usually quite mean. "Hey, Snotface, mom told you to take out the trash!" That was Em.

"Can't you see I'm still mourning!?" Michael asked as he crossed the room and sat in the big green beanbag chair. He slumped down and began to cry again as he remembered how Kin used to love crawling on the soft chair. Em and Gem looked at each other and both lifted the beanbag chair out from under him. "I said that mom wanted you to take out the trash!" yelled Em.

Michael yelled out in surprise then solemnly got up to do the chore. He wiped his eyes and nose before he opened the front door with the bag of trash next to his feet. There were still other kids playing outside right now and he didn't want to be seen crying. Then he picked up the trash and tossed it into the big trash can. He went back inside and crawled into bed for the rest of the night...

"Yo! Snotface! Dad said that you have to eat with us!" was all Michael heard then no more... He just laid in his bed and stared at the ceiling. His mind occasionally drifted off to sleep but other than that he just thought about all the times he had with Kin and all the stuff they still didn't get to do. "I want Kin back." was the last thing he said before he nodded off again.

When he was finally asleep, he heard a scratching noise just outside of his door. He stared at the door and slowly got up. The door gradually opened then he went to grab the door to open it a bit more but suddenly somebody jumped into his room and he began to yell for his parents. "Mom! Dad! Mo-!" Until he realized it was just Gem. "Why the heck did you do that for?" he said to her. Gem was laughing on the floor at this point and both their parents rushed into the room. They saw Gem then looked at their frightened son. "Go back to bed you two." Tim said to them. Gloria yawned and followed her husband back to bed as Gem left sniggering.

Michael climbed back into bed and eventually fell asleep again. That's when he heard the scratching again. "Gem, you better not do that or else I'm getting Dad!" Michael said towards the door. But all that replied was more scratching. "E-Em? Ge-Gem?" The scratching persisted. Then there was a quiet little knock.

Michael jumped out of bed and went to lock his door. He didn't want his sisters to scare him again. But the door gradually opened once more. Michael nearly yelled but covered his mouth with his own hands as he saw a skeletal hand hold the door open. Sure, he wanted his parents to come back but what if this was another trick his sisters were doing? His parents might start calling him a tattle-tale or remind him of the boy who cried wolf.

The hand pushed the door open wider so that Michael can see who it was. He has only seen pictures of this person. Always wearing that black robe that it wore right now. Always had arms and hands like a skeleton. And always had that hood up over its head so that nobody can see its skull. Michael whimpered and backed up against the foot of his bed, there he sat down and huddled into a ball as he continued to stare at Death.

Death turned its head down at Michael, at least that is what Michael thought it did. It then reached into a pocket on its black robe and brought out a small thing. It held the thing towards Michael so he could see it better. "K-Kin!" was all Michael was able to whisper in Death's presence. Then it held up a paper that Michael signed right away because he wanted his Kin back so badly. Death rolled up the paper and tucked it inside its robes, put the gerbil onto the bed along with a strip of paper then walked back out. Michael stared after him, not believing his eyes until he heard a soft chirping from his bed. Kin was here! He was finally back with Michael! He jumped for joy, picked up Kin who felt a bit cold but he didn't think much of it as he sat down on his bed and pet the little guy.

The next morning, Kin was placed back in his little cage with a bowl of fresh gerbil food and the bottle filled with fresh water. Michael sat on his bed and watched Kin walk around his home again. He sighed happily.

As he was eating breakfast with the rest of the family, Em stared at him. Then she said "So, how is Kin enjoying the dirt?" Then their mom swatted her on the shoulder, "Ow! I was just asking..."

"You know what just happened yesterday! Now, be nice to your brother." Gloria said as she scolded her daughters.

"It's alright mom. Kin came back!" The whole table went quiet then their Dad said, "I think you're suffering from denial." Michael stared at his family and said "No! Really! He came back, he's in his cage right now!" He got up from the table and ran back to his room to grab Kin but he was no longer there. "Kin? No!" He searched the whole room but Kin was not anywhere. Glumly, he left his room as he heard his sisters laugh at him and teased him about imagining things.

Later that day, as he watched some television to get his mind off Kin, he felt something bite his pinkie which was on the armrest of the couch. "Ow!" He looked down to see the unlucky bug that bit him. "Kin!" Michael looked at him closely. "Kin? Are you alright?" He picked up the gerbil but he bit him again. "Ow! What's gotten into you?" He carefully picked Kin up again so that he wouldn't bite him again. Then he placed him back into the cage and he sat on his bed to stare at Kin. He noticed that there was a piece of paper by his left hand. He picked it up and read "You have agreed to let Death revive all of your pets' bodies. Since the souls of your own pets are in paradise and there are many lost souls that are still in need of animal bodies, you have also given permission for your pets' bodies to be possessed by these aforementioned souls. Warning: These souls may be considered dark and wild."

"Huh?" was all Michael said after reading this then he heard Em and Gem scream in their room. He quickly ran over to their room and opened it carefully because he will be murdered if he ever trespassed into the girls' room. He peeked in and saw a Terrier in nothing but skin and bones barking at the girls who were hiding in their closet. "Hey! Over here!" then the dog turned toward him, giving the girls time to run out of the room. It was Cherry and she was foaming at the mouth. "Ahhh!" He ran back to his room and found Max the hamster, Harry the cat and Lucy the turtle all at the foot of his bed. They all looked at him darkly as Kin joined them. "Ahhh!"

Em, Gem and Michael ran down the stairs and out of the house. They noticed that the front door was chewed at the bottom to the point that there was a big enough hole for any small animal. They open the door and start running down the street as the Terrier chased them. "What did you do?" Gem screamed at Michael as they climbed up a children's' play-set in the park. "I think this was because I signed a paper!" Both girls screamed incoherent questions at him for a couple minutes until he said "I just wanted Kin back! You probably would have done the same with Cherry!" Em yelled, "we wouldn't have been this desperate! Now it's all your fault that we are being attacked by these animals!"

Michael knew this was all his fault so he formed a plan. "Em, Gem, you two distract Cherry while I go back to the house." The two girls agreed after a little more persuasion. As they distracted Cherry by bringing a foot back to the ground then yanked it back up just out of the dog's reach, Michael ran back to the house. He quickly searched around as he tried to figure out the next part of his plan. He couldn't call the police, nobody will believe him. So he went to the garage, grabbed a huge hammer. He hated this idea but he knew it would work... He went to the stairs to head up to his room but all the pets were already at the foot of the stairs. He yelled at the top of his lungs as he got rid of the zombie critters. He was panting with exhaustion from having to do the deed.

He went back to where the girls were still screaming and the dog was still trying to get to them. Michael snuck up from behind the dog and got rid of the zombie. He slumped to the ground while sobbing his eyes out, he no longer cared who caught him crying. He felt his two sisters hug him while as they cried too. The trio took off and buried the dead-for-good creatures and went back home.

That night Michael climbed into bed after he said good night to his sisters. "Good night!" The girls said at the same time. He smiled as he pulled the covers over himself and began to nod off to sleep... Then he felt something bite him. "SOMEBODY HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Boy, oh boy, do I have a neat story in mind for all of you tomorrow. It is called The Producer.
